Shela Jean Younger


Shela Jean Younger, 72, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at her home.
Born Oct. 27, 1946, in Cumberland, Mrs. Younger was the daughter of the late Warren Harding Richard Washington and Jean Florietta (Jones) Washington. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 14 years, Leroy Younger; and a sister, Paula Sanker.
A graduate of Fort Hill High School, Class of 1964, Shela was a former employee of Celanese, Peskins, Bon-Ton, and The Book Centre. She was a member of the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church where she was a very active member of the Choir, Missionaries, and the Hospitality Group. Shela was also a member of the Red Hat Society and the J&C. She liked painting, crafts, shopping, baking, and attending the grandchildren's games. Shela enjoyed having the family over for the holidays and listening to oldies music.
Shela is survived by her daughter, Tammy Hilton; her sons, Stephen Washington, Sr., and wife, Shari, and James Hilton, Jr., and wife, Mary; and a special son, Eugene "Geno" Taylor, Jr. She also leaves behind her sisters, Deborah Keyes and Karen Washington; her grandchildren, Alexa Spriggs, Isaiah Spriggs, Stephen Washington, Jr., Briannah Alger, Demetrius Hilton, and Desirae Hilton; a special aunt, Sue Jones; and her protectors, Vader and Diesel; as well as numerous nieces, nephews.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, ( on Tuesday, April 30, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A funeral service will follow at Noon with the Reverend Dr. J. Anthony Josey officiating.
Interment will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Maryland Chapter, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093.
