Shirley's Story

Text size

Shirley Marie Conway, 82, of Latrobe, Pa., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with dementia.
Born on Nov. 15, 1935, in Cumberland, she was the only child of the late Lena Delbrook Markwood and Rumsey Preston Markwood. She was preceded in death in 1997 by her husband, Robert J. Conway, whom she lovingly cared for during his fight with early-onset Alzheimer's disease.
Shirley graduated from Allegany High School, Cumberland, and attended Seton Hill College. She retired in 1998 after a 30-year career with Commercial National Bank and Trust where she worked in various positions, including manager of the Lincoln Road office and senior auditor.
After retirement, she traveled with friends and also became an accomplished tole and decorative painter. She enjoyed an active lifestyle and still was walking a mile each day up until three months before her death. Shirley's biggest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She lived a faith-filled life and was a long-term member of Bethany United Methodist Church, where she served as secretary of the Administrative Board and a member of the Pastoral Church Relations Committee and volunteered for various church functions.
She was very active in the community and was a long-time member of Latrobe Business and Professional Women's Association, serving as their president. She served on the board of the Alzheimer's Association of Westmoreland County and was a member of the Latrobe Century Club, Welcome Wagon, and Settler's Club.
Shirley is survived by three children, Michael F. Conway (Suzanne) of Waxhaw, N.C., Helene Conway-Long (Tom Long) of Latrobe, and John R. Conway (David Starry) of Greensburg, Pa.
She also is survived by five grandchildren, Scott Conway (Sheila), Kristy Klingensmith (Alan), Alexis Tragos Stockard (Robert), twins Caela and Patrick Long; and six great-grandchildren, Makayla Conway, identical twins Jack and Oliver Stockard, and Ella, Kendall and Addie Klingensmith.
The family thanks the staff of Seton Care, the staff at Westmoreland Manor, and Heartland Hospice for their care and compassion during Shirley's final days.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to Bethany United Methodist Church, 2415 Laveen St., Latrobe, PA 15650.
