Shirley Fay Thomas, 88, of Oakland, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, at Garrett Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 1, 1929, in Boswell, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Clayton Lee Tressler Sr. and Rose (Shevel) Tressler Raymond. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Clayton Lee Tressler Jr.
Shirley grew up in Friendsville, where she met her husband of 70 years, Charles Clayton Thomas Sr. In 1960, her husband was appointed superintendent of Herrington Manor and Swallow Falls State Park, and she raised her family on the grounds of Herrington Manor State Park. Upon her husband's retirement, they built their own home overlooking Deep Creek Lake where she resided until her death.
She was a homemaker most of her life and enjoyed baking, canning and preserving. After her children were grown, she decided to spread her wings and became employed with Garrett County Board of Education for a number of years as a cafeteria worker at Broad Ford Elementary School. She had an abiding love of animals and especially enjoyed spending time with her cat and her daughters' cats and dogs.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Clayton Thomas Sr.; two sons, Charles Clayton Thomas Jr. and wife, Linda, Frostburg; Brad Edward Thomas and wife, JaNel, Cumberland; two daughters, Diana Marie Thomas and Debbie Ann Savage, both of Oakland; a brother, Ronald Earl Tressler, Florida; a grandson, who was the apple of her eye, Samuel Edward Thomas along with his mother, Jodie Thomas, McHenry; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Drive, Oakland, on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Services will follow in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Carroll Harvey officiating.
Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
