KEYSER, W.Va. T. Edward Smith, 81, of Cornell Street, Keyser, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017, at the Piney Valley Nursing Home, Keyser.
Born on July 7, 1936, at Keyser, he was a son of the late George Edward and Wanda Maxine (Sanders) Smith. He also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Vickie Ann Smith.
Mr. Smith was a graduate of Keyser High School and Potomac State College. He received his B.S. Degree from WVU and his Masters Degree from Frostburg State University. He served in the United States Air Force from 1954-58, and retired as the manager of the finished products warehouse with the Westvaco Luke Mill with 32 years of service. He was a member, deacon and elder of the Keyser Presbyterian Church and was a past member of the Committee on Preparation for the Ministry with the Shenandoah Presbytery. His community and service affiliations were many and include being a member and past president of the Keyser Jaycees and was named Outstanding Jaycee in 1966, Life member of the WVU Alumni Association, and Past President of Potomac Valley Chapter, past vice-president and treasurer of the Mineral County Democratic Executive Committee, Outstanding Democrat of the Year in 1990 and served as former Cub Master for Pack 24. He was a retired member of the Supervisory Committee for WEPCO Federal Credit Union, co-chair of the Keyser High School World War II Memorial, former member of the Keyser Utility Board, former member of Campus and Community Ministry at Potomac State College and was a member of the Keyser High School Foundation Committee. He was the first elected president of the Mineral County United Way and the J. Edward Kelley Society, having been named the 1954 recipient of the J. Edward Kelley Award and was the founder of the Kelley Society. He served as the co-Chair and treasurer of the Nifty 50's Reunion, former treasurer and currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Faith in Action Food Pantry, was a 2012 inductee to the WVU Emeritus Club, a 2012 nominee of the WV AARP Andrus Award, was named Chapter Leader Emeritus of WVU in 2013 and was named to the Keyser Legion of Honor in 2013. In addition, he was chosen by the Mineral Daily News-Tribune as a "Senior making a Difference" in 2010, named Mineral County Father of the Year in 1973, received the 2016 "Service Above Self" award by the Keyser Rotary Club and was a recipient of the Mineral County United Way Caring Award in 2007.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Elrose (Tibbetts) Smith; his children, Mark Edward Smith and Tena of Fort Ashby, Kimberly Sue Foster of Front Royal, Va., and Julie Lynn Miers and husband, David of Cincinnati, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Camden Smith, Ashley Foster, Garrett Foster and Kade Miers.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Tom Forbes officiating.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
