Velma's Story

Text size

Velma E. Long, 90, of Wiley Ford, who temporarily resided at Cumberland Healthcare Center, formerly Golden Living Center, was set free from this physical world and received her long awaited angel wings, which she much deserved, on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017.
Born May 25, 1927, Velma was the precious daughter of the late Oliver Steward and Mary Alice Imes. She was preceded in death by her deeply missed husband, Oscar E. Long, as well as heroic and fearless son, Staff Sgt. Roger Dale Wilfong. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, whom she adored, Betty Decker and Margaret Bernhard.
Velma was a treasured soul and one of God's most precious gifts to her family and friends. In her free time, Velma enjoyed both cooking and baking for her loved ones and sharing those moments in the kitchen with her grandchildren, especially during the holidays. While she loved her kitchen, nothing made her smile more than doing for others and creating memories with her family whom she held so very close to her heart. Aside from her time at home, she would never pass up a night at bingo or a well-spent day at the casino alongside her favorite slot machine.
Velma is survived by the light of her life and adored son, Doug Long and wife, Roxanne Long, of Wiley Ford, as well as her daughter, Sharon Wilson, of Monette, Ark. She is also survived by six grandchildren whom she cherished, April Adams of Winchester, Va., Mindy Long of Wake Forest, N.C., Amanda Aguallo of Cumberland, John Long, Alicia Long, and Justin Long, all who reside in Wiley Ford; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild as well as another due in May 2018. She also leaves behind a loving brother and wife, Robert and Bonnie Imes, as well as many nieces and nephews. Velma will be loved and missed by many. Her selflessness and gratitude will continue to shine throughout her loved ones.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Western Maryland Hospice Care who cared for Velma during her final months with us. We would also like to express a heartfelt thank you to Donna Propst, Amy Schriver, and Kaylee Hilliard at Cumberland Healthcare Center, as well as loving and faithful roommate, Lynda Ruse, who treated Velma as her own.
Per Velma's wishes, friends and family will be received on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, for a closed-casket visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. Funeral services will follow with Pastor Benny Brakeall officiating. Visitation and services will be conducted at Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland.
Velma will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband and son at Davis Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Long, Justin Long, Tracy House, David Imes, Chris Northcraft, and Todd Moyer.
In lieu of flowers, all contributions can be made to Wiley Ford Fire Department, who have all been so gracious and caring with Velma in the past years.
Condolences for the family may be left at www.ScarpelliFH.com.
