Vernon's Story

Vernon Delmar Shriver, 89, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, at his home.
Born April 4, 1928, in Cumberland, Mr. Shriver was the son of the late Charles Edward Shriver and Pearl Myrtle (Brotemarkle) Shriver. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Shirley J. Shriver, April 27, 2010; a daughter, Lisa Powell; a brother, Ernest Shriver; and a grandson, David M. Shriver II.
Vernon retired from the Maryland State Highway Administration as an inspector. He was a member of Living Stone Church of the Brethren, Cresaptown Eagles Aerie 2883, and a founding and lifetime member of Piney Run Gun Club. Vernon served as vice president of the Maryland Classified Employees Association. Dad was a great husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who taught his family well.
Vernon is survived by his son, David M. Shriver and special friend, Karen Crosten, Cumberland; and his daughters, Bonnie K. Teeter and husband, Olie Jr., Flintstone, Cathy L. Berry and husband, William, Keyser, W.Va.; Jamie E. Buchholtz and husband, Gareth II, Cumberland; and a son-in-law, Ty Powell, Midlothian, Va. Vernon is also survived by his grandchildren, Robert Teeter and wife, Lisa, Hancock, Gretchen Crosser and husband, Keith, Maurertown, Va., Ginger Hopwood, Springfield, W.Va., Sarah Teeter, Flintstone, Brock S. Shriver and fiancée, Danielle Bosley, Hagerstown, Charles J. Shriver and wife, Desiree, Hagerstown, Megan D. Leach-House, Denver, Colo., Mark S. Buchholtz and wife, Theresa, Baltimore, Michael C. Buchholtz, Cumberland, Lauren K. Bowman and husband, Tim, of N.C., and Leah K. Powell, Midlothian, Va. Vernon also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, Chelsea Crosser, Sidney Crosser, Elizabeth Teeter, Noah Teeter, Jo Hopwood, Rylee Hopwood, Elin Joi Hopwood, Ayla Leach, Dylan Buchholtz, Blake Buchholtz, Lily, Cameron, and Kelley Shriver, Savannah and Jackson Bosley, Lydia and Luke Bowman; and a brother, Donald Shriver and his wife, Ruby, Flintstone.
Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St. (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com), on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at 11 a.m. with Olie Teeter Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Living Stone Church of the Brethren Youth Fund, West Second and North Cedar Streets, Cumberland, MD 21502.
