RIDGELEY, W.Va. Walter Lynn Carr, 67 of Ridgeley, passed away quietly at his residence, following a short battle with cancer.
Lynn was born in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 3, 1950, to Woodrow and Betty (Dove) Carr. He moved to Ridgeley in 1952, and was raised by his grandparents, Walter and Bertha Wratchford, along with assistance from Lucille, Grace, Lenora, Edith, Howard and their families.
Lynn graduated from Ridgeley High School, served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps, and retired from Nelson Auto Sales after 31 years of service. He served as the Mayor of Ridgeley for the past five years and was recently elected to his 14th year as President of Alaskan Village Territory at Big Bear Lake in Preston County.
He joined the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Company on June 20, 1977, and was currently serving as Vice-President, Engineer, and on the Executive Board. Throughout his time with the fire company, he held the offices of Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain, and Chaplain and won numerous awards for his dedication. Lynn was always proud of his brothers and sisters at the station and bragged on them at every opportunity.
He leaves behind his wife, Sylvia (Schoonover) Carr, whom he married on Sept. 23, 1973. He was the proud father of Nanette (Carr) McCreight (Kevin) and Angelic (Carr) Kinder (Jimmy Cummings). He was the grandfather of Elizabeth McCreight and Jessica Horn, who were the joy of his life.
Besides his wife, children, and grandchildren, Lynn leaves behind one cousin, Paula Poole. When he and Sylvia were married, Lynn instantly got four sisters, (Diana, Mary Lou, Karen, and Linda). During "Pumpkin Hour," he was not sure he wanted to claim any of them. The Schoonover Reunion was a must trip each year along with events involving Glen, Sis, and their family.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, from 4 to 8 p.m. The Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Company will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.
