Willard's Story

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. Willard M. Kitzmiller, 86, of Morgantown, formerly of LaVale, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017, at the Louis A. Johnson V.A. Medical Center.
Born Oct. 2, 1931, in Keyser, he was the son of the late Thomas and Bessie (Burns) Kitzmiller.
He was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Mary Benhase and Frances Hartman.
Willard graduated from Keyser High School. He attended Potomac State College and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Shepherd College. He went on to earn his Master's Degree in Education Administration from West Virginia University.
Willard had taught and served as principal at Fountain Elementary School. In Allegany County, Mr. Kitzmiller taught at LaVale Elementary School. He served as principal at Westernport and John Humbird Elementary Schools.
Willard was a member of Christ Lutheran Church; Davis Lodge 51, A.F. & A.M.; 32nd degree, Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies; Ali Ghan Shrine, where he belonged to the Motor Corps and Shepherds Unit; and Cumberland Court 117 ROJ. He was proud to serve as president of the Maryland State Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Jane (Martz) Kitzmiller; two daughters, Margaret Drummond and husband, Dave, and Cynthia Kilcoyne; his son, Thomas Kitzmiller and wife, Amy; and five grandchildren, Ryan Williams, Jessie Kilcoyne, Max, Emma, and Addison Kitzmiller.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, from 4 to 7 PM.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at 10 a.m. in Christ Lutheran Church, 1222 Vocke Rd, LaVale, with the Rev. Tormod Svensson, officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be accorded by Fort Cumberland Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
