William "Bill"'s Story
SHORT GAP, W.Va. William "Bill" F. Price Jr., 76, of Short Gap, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, at The Dawnview Center.
Born Aug. 2, 1941, in Fort Ashby, he was the son of the late William F. Price Sr. and Lillian Leona (Chaney) Price.
He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Chris Mantheiy, and a grandson, Zachary Michael Price.
Bill was a 1959 graduate of Fort Ashby High School.
He had served in the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Price was employed at Walter N. Yoder and Sons for 30 years. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 453. In his later years he became a member of Operating Engineers Local 37.
Bill belonged to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
Bill was well known for his years of pitching softball for Yoder's Plumbers in the City Softball League in Cumberland. He won many awards which included the 1968 Dapper Dan Achievement Award for Player of the Year when he finished the season winning 41 city games, pitching 40 ½ consecutive scoreless innings, firing three no hitters, including a perfect game, and led the league with a batting average of .515. Bill was elected to the Cumberland Hall of Fame in 1968 for his recognition of his contribution to softball in the Cumberland Area.
Bill coached girls' softball for the Potomac Valley Girls League and spent countless hours volunteering field work at Frankfort High School. After retirement, Bill designed and built a barrel train, which was enjoyed by many in the community at Bible Schools, Festivals, Parades, and other local events.
Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Carol (Umstot) Price; two daughters, Denise Mantheiy and Tina Roberson; grandchildren, Josh, Emily, and Lily Mantheiy, and Jordan and Noah Roberson; brothers, Paul Price and wife, Bonnie, Short Gap, twins, Donnie Price and wife,Darlene, Williamsburg, Va., and Ronnie Price and wife, Leona, Looneyville; sisters, Norma Shanholtzer, Springfield, Jeannie Robertson, Fountain, and Anna Wheeler and husband, Mike, Bellevue, Neb.; brother-in-law, Floyd N. Umstot Jr. and wife Jean, Pinto; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Scott Knowlton and Pastor Brent Biller, officiating
Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by Fort Cumberland Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be his nephews; Scott Price, Andrew Robertson, Donnie Umstot, Dale Umstot, Derek Price, Steve Price, and Cliff Williams. Honorary Pallbearers will be Doug Umstot, Randy Umstot, and Dale Chase.
