BEL AIR William N. Buchanan Sr., 78, of Bel Air, Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at the Cumberland Healthcare Center.
Born in Salisbury, on March 14, 1939, he was the son of the late Catherine L. (Tracy) and William K. Buchanan.
Bill was a graduate of South Hagerstown High School class of 1957. Following high school, he served his country in the United States Army in the 7th Surgery Hospital in Ft. Jackson, S.C. A Refrigeration Mechanic and Journeyman Pipefitter, Bill was employed at M.S. Johnston and Sons in Hagerstown, Walter N. Yoder and Sons in Cumberland, and Buchanan and Norris Builders Pool and Ski Shop where he was a business partner of Charles Norris. In 2000, Bill retired from All Seasons Air Conditioning and Heating.
Bill was a member of the Knobley Mountain Hunt Club, Cresaptown Eagles Sportsman Club, Piney Mountain Hunt Club, and the NRA. He received a commendation from Maryland Department of Natural Resources for 10 years of service as a Certified Instructor of Hunter Safety in Allegany County. Bill was also a member of Aerie 2883, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Cresaptown.
Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dora Jean (Shaffer) Buchanan; son, William N. Buchanan Jr. and wife, Debra, Bel Air; granddaughters, Toni L. Buchanan and Jon Diamond, Wrightsville, Pa. and Taylor L. Buchanan, Cumberland; sister, Rebecca Melody of Williamsport; special friend, Gary Cosner, who spent many hours with Bill before his illness, tinkering in their garages, talking, and taking day road trips. He continued this friendship with his many visits to Bill at the Golden Living Center.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the caring and compassion shown to Bill and our family from the entire staff of the Cumberland Healthcare Center during the two years Bill was a resident. Also a special thank you goes out to Doris Schute for her sincere love and care to Bill. She supported the family and shared our love of Bill.
At Bill's request, he will be cremated. Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 25, 2017, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., Cresaptown, 15205 McMullen Hwy SW.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, May 26, 2017, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Harold McClay Jr. officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.
Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by the Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
Inurnment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Park at a later date.
