William's Story

EDMOND, Okla. William Buford Wood, 89, passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, in Edmond, from Alzheimer's.
"Bill" was born on May 9, 1928, in Clarence, Mo., to OC and Rosa Wood.
Bill spent most of his childhood in Mexico, Mo., working with his family on many farms in the area. In 1947, he moved to Frostburg to work for Big Savage and Kaiser Refractories. He retired as the office manager and purchasing agent after 32 years. In his spare time Bill was an amateur boxer, fighting at the local armories and clubs. He married Ruth Gayle Mercer on Sept. 17, 1950 in Macon. Not ready for retirement, Bill went on to work for the State of Maryland, first as the supply officer for the Division of corrections at MRDCC in Baltimore and finally as the District 3 safety officer for the Department of Transportation in Greenbelt. In 2001, Bill and his wife "officially" retired to Avon Park, Fla. He enjoyed playing golf, going dancing, playing cards with neighbors, riding his bike, volunteering with the Jolly Gents, being the neighborhood handyman and enjoying a cold beer now and then. Bill was a proud member of the Maryland Army National Guard serving from 1952 to 1982. He commanded units in Frostburg, Cumberland, Oakland, and Woodstock retiring as a Lt. Colonel. Bill was a charter member of Maplehurst Country Club, a member of American Legion Post 69, Sebring Elks 1529, Frostburg Moose LOOM 270, Maryland National Guard Association, Military Officer's Association, and the National Guard Association of America.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Mercer Wood; his son, Howie Wood; his parents, OC and Rosa Wood; a twin sister, Mary Winifred Spurling; sisters, Doris Moore, Glenna True and Nona Leonard.
Bill is survived by a son, Blaine and wife Anne of Edmond; grandson, Nicolas Wood and wife, Alyssa of Peachtree Corners, Ga.; granddaughter, Rachel Sabatini and husband, Ryan of Springdale, Ark.; granddaughter, Carleigh Mercer Wood and fiancé, Jason Rinehart of Edmond; granddaughter, Krista J. Singleton and husband, Kirk of Hagerstown; grandson, Brandon Wood and wife, Brooke of Roswell, Ga.; great grandchildren, Kaleb Singleton, Kathryn Singleton, Kole Singleton, Ben Wood and Blake Wood. And his loyal dog - Bea.
A private burial service will be held this summer at the United States Veterans Cemetery in Rocky Gap.
