LAVALE Earl Ernest Poorbaugh, 92, of LaVale, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Allegany Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born March 4, 1925, in Wellersburg, Pa., Mr. Poorbaugh was the son of the late William Henry Poorbaugh and Maud (Robinette) Poorbaugh. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Grace (Kifer) Poorbaugh; an infant son, Steven P. Poorbaugh; and a sister, Anna Poorbaugh Clauson.
Upon graduation from Allegany High School, Earl entered the United States Army/Air Corps where he flew 32 combat missions during World War II. After the war, he returned to Cumberland, worked for Asplundh Tree Company, and then worked with his dad as a painting contractor and eventually as an individual contractor. He was a lifelong member of the local painters' union and he was also a proud member of the Cumberland Post 13 of the American Legion.
Earl loved baseball and for many years served as a coach for the Pen-Mar Baseball league. He was also the regional representative for the Cincinnati Reds Scout organization. Most of all Earl loved his family and friends. His favorite thing was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Earl is survived by his sons, William E. Poorbaugh and wife, Linda, and Douglas W. Poorbaugh and wife, Lynn; three grandchildren, Christina Poorbaugh Adams, William E. Poorbaugh Jr., and Tarah Poorbaugh Stevens; and six great-grandchildren, Brendan and Brianna Adams, Sierra and Austin Poorbaugh, and Kaitlin and Ashley Stevens. He also leaves behind his sister, Virginia Poorbaugh Scritchfield; and his sister-in-law and companion, Gertrude Kifer.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Saturday, May 27, 2017, from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday, May 28, 2017, at 11 a.m.
A private interment will be in Prosperity Christian Cemetery.
