John's Story

CUMBERLAND - John Francis McCormick Jr., 70, of Cumberland, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2017, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family.
Born on Dec. 20, 1946, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late John F. McCormick Sr., and Mary (Cavan) McCormick. As a 1964 graduate of LaSalle High School, John went on to work at the Cumberland Savings Bank and then First United for a total of 29 years. Because of his love and passion for helping others, John became very active in his community by being an active member of the Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, and Alhambra Organizations that facilitated events such as the Special Olympics, ACITs, Memorial Day cemetery flag laying, and much more. He was also actively involved with Red Cross, The American Heart Association, and various other organizations.
John's love of sports and his enjoyment of youth involvement in sports led to many dedicated years coaching his children and grandchildren, as well as supporting Bishop Walsh Soccer and Basketball programs within the last few years. John loved his country and served as Sgt. 1st class for six years as a loyal member of the National Guard. John was devoted to his Catholic faith as a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parishes for many years. John's legacy will far outlive any words written in ink. His charismatic and charming personality will live on in the hearts of those who loved him most and in the hearts of the many who loved him.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his nephew, David Coffman; brother-in-law, Frank Coffman; mother-in-law, Christina Brehm; father-in-law, Lawrence Brehm; and uncle, Ray Evans.
John is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandra (Brehm) McCormick; one son, Duane McCormick and wife, Christina; one daughter, Nicol Marie McCormick; sister-in-law, Marie E. Coffman and husband, Skip Gray; one aunt, Jean Evans; two grandsons, Alex Serrano, and Kevin McCormick; four brothers, Dennis McCormick and wife, Patti, Terry McCormick and wife, Sue, Patrick McCormick and wife, Julie, and Morgan McCormick and wife, Cheryl; one sister, Rosemary McCormick; several nieces and nephews, Christa Geib, Dr. Jennifer Coffman, Erin Dudley, Abby Twigg, Molly McCormick, Brandon McCormick, and Chris McCormick; and three cousins, Greg and Dave Evans, and Gail Sides.
The family would like to thank the tireless, devoted, and loving care John and his family received from the Fifth Floor, High Level Care Unit Nurses, CNAs, and Staff, including Dr. Dwyer, Dr. Mangla, Dr. Dabas, Dr. Yin, Dr. Mills, and Dr. Pappas at Western Maryland Health System.
At John's request, he will be cremated. A Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 300 E Oldtown Road, Cumberland, on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at 10 a.m. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the mass.
Inurnment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
