Lillian's Story

Lillian Ellen (Wassen) McFarland, 100, of Cumberland, formerly of Ridgeley, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017, at The Lions Center.
Born July 2, 1917, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edgar Wassen and Ella Nora (Kendall) Wassen.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. McFarland; a son, Earl E. McFarland; a son-in-law, Robert Bohrer; a grandson, Charles I. Smiley; a grandson-in-law, Kevin Gear; and three sisters, June Heir, Eileen Knight, and Larue Broderick.
Mrs. McFarland had worked at the Fort Cumberland Hotel and was a retired kitchen aide from the Cumberland Holiday Inn.
She belonged to Calvary United Methodist Church and was a former member of Chapter 914, Women of the Moose.
Survivors include her two daughters, Sandra Whitacre, Cumberland, and Rebecca Bohrer, Carpendale; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, from 6 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard Jewell officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
