BURLINGTON, W.Va. Preston Joseph "Pete" Miller, 78, of Beaver Run Road, Burlington, passed away peacefully on Saturday June 10, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born on Aug. 1, 1938, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Preston R. Miller and Chattie (Llewellyn) Jones. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert H. Miller.
Mr. Miller was a 1955 graduate of Phoenix Union High School, Phoenix Ariz. From high school he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Germany as a Military Policeman during the Korean War. He later received his Bachelors in Physics from Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, Va., and went on to get his Masters plus 45 from West Virginia University, Morgantown. He was a school teacher for over 53 years and taught at Fort Defiance High School, in Virginia and Fort Ashby High School, Frankfort High School, Keyser High School, and Potomac State College, all in West Virginia. He coached Cross Country at Fort Defiance and then Frankfort for many years. He was an avid runner in cross country and marathons. He was the Pastor of the Beaver Run Church of the Brethren in Burlington for the last 38 years. As a Pastor he was an inspiration to many and he continued to serve the Lord and preach the Gospel up until three weeks prior to his passing.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Naomi J. (Moreland) Miller; one son, Todd Michael Miller; one daughter, Dana Lynn Branson, all of Burlington; two grandchildren, John David Diehl of Burlington, and Destiny Renae Branson of Martinsburg; one step grandson, Damon Branson Jr., of Shepherdstown; six great-grandchildren, Tyler Diehl, Ian Diehl, Hailey Diehl, Riley Diehl, Aubrie Washington, and Amir Washington; numerous nieces and nephews; and his three special pets, Copper, Suzi, and Beau.
Friends may call at the Beaver Run Church of the Brethren, in Burlington, on Saturday June 17, 2017, from 10 a.m. until noon.
A celebration of life will be conducted at the church immediately following the visitation at noon with Pastor Tim Westrom and John Mark Miller officiating.
An interment service will be held at the Abe Cemetery, Old Furnace Road, Ridgeley, on Sunday June 18, 2017, at 1 p.m. Military Honors will be accorded. A procession to the cemetery will begin at the Beaver Run Church in Burlington at noon.
The Smith Funeral Home, Burlington Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
