Robert Boyd Thomas Sr., formerly of Lonaconing, died at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center on Sept. 19, 2017, at the age of 91.
He was the son of the late Anna Mary Stoudt and Ivan Boyd Thomas.
A 1943 graduate of Central High School in Lonaconing, Robert enlisted in the United States Merchant Marine Academy where he served as a lieutenant in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres during World War II. He participated in the D-Day Invasion as well as Anzio, Italy. Following his distinguished military service, Robert worked for 17 years as a court reporter for the circuit courts of both Allegany and Garrett Counties.
In 1966, he joined the reporting firm of Ward & Paul Stenographic Reporters in Washington, D.C. During this time, he served as one of the official stenographic reporters for the Senate Watergate hearings in 1973, as well as the Joint Committee on Assassinations for the United States Congress. As such, Robert prepared official transcripts of hearings regarding the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, presidential candidate, Robert Kennedy, and Civil Rights activist, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
Appointed as a stenographer for the United States House of Representatives, Robert worked as the deputy director of Official Reporters to Committees, until his retirement from government service in 1988.
Upon his retirement and death of his wife, Betty Jane Marshall Thomas, he returned to Allegany County and started Robert B. Thomas and Associates Court Reporting.
He is survived by his loving second wife, Mary Delores "Dee" Thomas; daughter, Donna Jean Alderton and husband, Jan, of Cumberland; and son, Robert Boyd Thomas Jr. of Joppa. Additionally, Robert is survived by three granddaughters, Linda Steele, Jenny Krampf, and Kimberly Brayman; and one grandson, Kevin Thomas. His five great-grandchildren are Jordan Krampf, Alex Steele, Jeremy Doyle, Mason Thomas, and Emma Brayman.
He enjoyed membership in the American Legion of Westernport, George's Creek Valley AF & AM Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Ali Ghan Shrine Club.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, at 11 a.m.
Interment will be at the Frostburg Memorial Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
