Thomas "Tom"'s Story

CUMBERLAND Thomas "Tom" Albert Bryant, 93, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at his residence, surrounded by his family.
Born April 18, 1924, in Cumberland, Thomas was the son of the late Robert Bryant and Rose (Cope) Bryant. His parents died at a young age. He was raised by his grandparents, the late William and Resley (Cosgrove) Cope. Thomas was also preceded in death by his brother, Jack Bryant; his grandsons, Tommy Hammersmith and Todd Nesselrodt; his son-in-law, Gary Nesselrodt; and his brother-in-law, Ed Lancaster
Tom was a dedicated member of the former Mapleside United Methodist Church and Oldtown United Methodist Church. Tom worked for B&O and CSX Railroad for 43 years. He retired as a machinist foreman. Tom served in the United States Naval Air Corps from 1943 to 1945, when he was discharged as an Aviation Ordnance Man Second Class USNI. He was a charter member of the Naval Reserves in Cumberland when they used to meet at Fort Hill High School. Tom was a member of Potomac Lodge 100 A.F.&A.M., having served as Tyler for many years, and an honorary member of Fort Cumberland Lodge 211, A.F.&A.M. He was also a member of the Cumberland Scottish Rite 33rd Degree, the Scottish Rite Retirement Club, Knights of Saint Andrews, Ali Ghan Shrine Railroad Unit, and the Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion. His lifelong love was hunting and fishing. Tom loved sitting in the hunting lodge with his buddies, telling old hunting stories, sitting at home, and reminiscing with his family and friends.
Thomas is survived by the loved of his life and childhood sweetheart, his wife of 74 wonderful years, Louella Clara (Radcliff) Bryant; and his daughters, Anna Nesselrodt, Carolyn "Sue" Wigfield, and Linda "Mickie" Fairall and husband, Jim. He also leaves behind a special niece he loved like a daughter, Christy Becker; and his grandchildren, Kimberly Scarlett, Aaron Hammersmith, Patrick Fairall and wife, Tessa, Lisa Shafer and husband, Dave, Jason Wigfield, John Wigfield, and Rene Rice and husband, Earl. Tom is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Brandon Scarlett and wife, Toni, Shannon Miller and husband, Aaron, Meghan Hammersmith, Molly Hammersmith, Kylie Hammersmith, Rachael Bennett, Rebecca Shafer and Tyler, Jacie Fairall, James P. Fairall and wife, Kim, Jenson Twigg, Jaredun Twigg, Javid Fairall, Jadison Fairall, and Waylon Canfield; and his great-great-grandchildren, Erin Scarlett, Josiah Miller, Sophia Miller, Addison Scarlett, Brenna Scarlett, Lilly Fairall, Levi Fairall, Mason Bennett, and Sawyer Eversole. He is also survived by his sister, Bessie Lancaster; and his brother, John Bryant and wife, Irma; and special family members, Nicole Reed, Denise Hammersmith and Charley Iliff; Tim Scarlett, Dennis Wigfield; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland,(www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Monday, May 29, 2017, from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. A Masonic Service will be conducted by the Potomac Lodge 100 A.F.&A.M., at 7:30 p.m. with a memorial service by the Scottish Rite to follow.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Charles Riggleman officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will Roger Mullenex, Brian Lepley, Rob Adams, Buddy Miles, Jamey Hill, and Tim Schupfer. Honorary pallbearers will be Brothers of the Potomac Lodge 100 A.F.&A.M., and the Cumberland Scottish Rite.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dawn Snyder, Dr. Gupta, Dr. Zaman, Dr. Sprenkle, Carla Leedy, RN, the WMHS Home Care, Hospice Care, the ladies at Johnson Heights Lab, and his friend, Pastor Charles Riggleman and wife, Jane.
Most important was his walk with his Lord and Savior. Every night of his life, Thomas got on his knees, thanking God for all his blessings. Through his love and actions, he taught his family the importance of serving the Lord. His main goal in life was to share the plan of salvation to all his family and friends.
