Alice Rowan (Bonnie) Obituary

Alice Lauvonne "Bonnie" nee Humphreys Rowan passed away peacefully on Jan. 28, 2025, at the Meadowbrook Memory Care, Arlington, Texas.

Born in Meriden, W.Va. on Sept. 2, 1929, she was the daughter of L. Stark and Mary Lala nee Annon Humphreys. She graduated Philippi High School 1946, earned a B.S. at Alderson Broaddus College and a Masters at West Virginia University.

Ms. Rowan taught at EC Glass HS, Lynchburg, Va.; Ridgeley HS, Ridgeley, W.Va.; Mannington HS, Mannington, W.Va.; Van Deventer Jr High, Parkersburg, W.Va.; and MacArthur HS, Decatur, Ill. for a total of 39 years. She taught physical science, PE/health, and coached girls track and field.

Bonnie was a liberated woman long before there was a Women's Liberation movement. She was an advocate for Equal Rights and a strong supporter of the Democratic party throughout her lifetime. She was also the primary family historian and photo archivist. Nothing made her happier than to regale a stranger about her great-great-grandmother firing the first shot in the first land battle of the Civil War, unless perhaps it would be a bowl of ice cream.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Mary Jessalie Dadisman, Imogene Louk, Janet Stemple, baby William Stark Humphreys; and ex-husband, James Rowan. She is survived by brothers, Joe (wife Janice) Humphreys, Jack Humphreys; her three sons, James (wife Lisa) Rowan, Gary Rowan, Scott (wife Pat Makielski) Rowan; grandson, Andrew Rowan; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A memorial will be held at noon on July 26, 2025, at the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church cemetery near Philippi, W.Va., followed by a remembrance at the 17 North Event Center located at 17 North Main St., Philippi, W.Va.
