Swanton, Maryland - Alvin John McGettigan, 91, of Swanton, Md., died Sunday, March 22, 2026, at his residence.

Born October 20, 1934, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late John Nelson & Agnes (Ewing) McGettigan. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy (Paxton) McGettigan; one sister, Donna McGettigan O'Roark and one brother, James McGettigan.

Mr. McGettigan was a math teacher in Allegany County, Md. & Mineral County, W.Va. He was a US Army veteran and of the Catholic faith. Mr. McGettigan grew up in Cresaptown, Md. and was a friendly helpful member of his community. He had a deep love for working around his home and spending time with his siblings, children and grandchildren. He loved life, was a hard worker, exhibited quiet strength and will be deeply missed by family and all who knew him.

Surviving is his wife, Martha E. (Woodard) McGettigan; three sons, David McGettigan & wife, Mary, Douglas McGettigan & wife, Susanne, Donald McGettigan & wife, Dara; one step-daughter, Holly Clark; two sisters, Doris White, Leanna Kirker; six grandchildren, Jeannetta Gerrish & husband, Matt, Adam McGettigan, John McGettigan, Nick McGettigan & fiancée, Ann Marie Lucas, Seth McGettigan & fiancée, Ophelia Session, Nancy McGettigan & fiancé, Pierce Gilden; five great-grandchildren, Liam McGettigan, Malin McGettigan, Dylan McGettigan, Paxton Gerrish and Annalise Gerrish.

At Mr. McGettigan's request, he will be cremated and no services are planned.
