Cumberland, Maryland - Baltis S. Whiteman, 99, of Cumberland, Md., passed away on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, at the Lions Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care.
Born Dec. 30, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pa., Mr. Whiteman was the son of the late Baltis Whiteman and Bessie (Lehman) Whiteman. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Whiteman, on May 8, 2014; a sister, Doris Otis; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Baltis was a graduate of Lower Merion High School Class of 1947, Ardmore, Pa., and a veteran of the United States Army, stationed in Italy and Greece. He was employed by General Electric in Philadelphia, Pa., then transferred to Cleveland, Ohio. He was also employed by NASA out of Cleveland.
He met Ruth Y. Tresize, of Cumberland, while employed by ABL. Baltis and Ruth married in 1962. He continued working as a mechanical designer in Ohio for 25 years. He retired at 61 and settled in Florida for 11 years. They came back to Cumberland in 1998.
Baltis was a 77-year member of the Community Lodge #744 A.F. & A.M. Broomall, Pa. Baltis had several hobbies when he was younger, including obtaining his private pilot license and flying his Tri-Pacer Airplane. Living in Cleveland, he liked boating on Lake Erie and also roaming rock shores, water skiing, and swimming. He had a home at the lake, where he liked playing golf too.
A committal service will be conducted at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026, at 10 a.m., with Chaplain Paul Demers officiating.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.
