Cumberland, MD - Barbara J. Henry, 92, of Cumberland, Md., passed away on April 19, 2026, at UMPC Western Maryland after a lingering illness.

Barbara was born on Dec. 1, 1933, in Great Cacapon, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, Levi and Viola Henry; her sister, Dorothy Newman; and niece, Diane Newman.

Barbara went to Mount Royal Elementary School and graduated from Allegany High School. Barbara also graduated from Frostburg State Teacher's College and the University of Maryland Graduate School. She took additional graduate classes at Frostburg State College.

Barbara taught for many years in the Allegany County School System, primarily at Parkside Elementary School. After retiring from teaching, she volunteered for many years at both Sacred Heart Hospital and Western Maryland Health Systems.

Barbara was a former member of Central United Methodist Church and Centre Street United Methodist Church. Recently, she attended Grace Memorial Community Church. Barbara was also a member of the Woman's Civic Club of Cumberland, the Maryland State Retired Teachers Association, and the Allegany County Retired Teachers Association.

Barbara enjoyed traveling, touring all 50 states and parts of Canada.

Barbara is survived by her niece, Karen (Newman) Kulla of Farmville, Va.; nephews, Brian Newman of Chesapeake Beach, Md., and Jeff Newman of Columbia, Md.; great-nieces, Briana Phair and Cara Newman; and great-nephews, Ryan Phair and Evan Newman.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, MD, on May 16, 2026, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. A memorial service will immediately follow at 11:30 a.m., with Pastor Mickey Stephens officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
