Hagerstown, Maryland - On Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, Betty Lorraine (Martens) Robeson went to be with her Lord.
Mrs. Robeson was born in Frostburg on July 18, 1934, the daughter of the late George Franklin Martens and Eleanor Mae (Thomas) Martens.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years - Joseph William Robeson.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Valentine, and grandson, Nicholas Valentine; and son, Keith William Robeson (wife, Liliana), and grandson Trajan Robeson.
She was preceded in death by sister, Leannah (Martens) Williams (husband, James Dale Williams), and is survived by their children - James Dale Williams Jr. and Kimberly Sue (Williams) Truly and her family.
Lorraine graduated as valedictorian in the 1952 Class of Beall High School.
She then attended Frostburg State College, graduating in 1956 with a teaching degree in elementary education.
She was active in various groups at the college and was a member of Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.
Lorraine also served as the summer playground director for Frostburg's East End Playground each of her four years of college.
She and Joe married in 1956 and moved to Shepherdstown, W.Va.
She taught one year at Sharpsburg Elementary, and then the next three years she was a fourth grade arithmetic teacher on Washington County's Closed Circuit Television.
During this time period, she appeared on the national television show "Today."
After leaving television teaching, she taught several years at Pangborn Elementary School before leaving to start a family.
During those years, she also earned a Masters Equivalency in Elementary Education.
Lorraine was a playground director at Surrey Elementary School for three years and at East End Park Playground for one year.
Also, as she had done in her church in Frostburg, Lorraine taught Sunday School at Emmanuel United Methodist Church for over 40 years and was always willing to help where she could.
In 1975, she returned to Pangborn Elementary School teaching Grades 3 and 4.
She retired in 1994.
She was a finalist for Washington County Teacher of the Year honors in her final year of 1994.
In addition to being an outstanding mother, wife, grandmother, and teacher, she was known by all in her school, her church, her community, her playground kids, and her family for her generous and caring nature.
There was nothing she would not do to help others.
She felt all things were possible because she had a deep and abiding faith.
Memorial services will be held Friday, March 3, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Boulevard North, Hagerstown, MD.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, March 2, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Interment will be private.
