Springfield, WV - Bryan Wayne Schmidt Sr., 55, of Springfield, W.Va., passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, after a short, courageous battle with cancer.

Born Oct. 18, 1970, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late William Edgar Schmidt and Bonnie Jean (Jones) Schmidt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ronnie Schmidt, as well as numerous aunts and uncles.

He attended South Hagerstown High School. He was previously employed by numerous trucking companies, including PGT Trucking and Quality Supplier.

For 37 years, he made the open road his second home, logging more than six million miles behind the wheel of his truck. More than just a driver, he was a dedicated trainer who took pride in teaching and mentoring countless new truck drivers, passing along not only his knowledge, but also his love for the profession.

He is survived by his loving wife and devoted caretaker of 40 years, Becky Schmidt, his "Beck"; his children, Bryan Jr. and wife, Tonya, of Cumberland, Md.; Candice and partner, Patricia, of Westernport, Md.; and Joshua of Keyser, W.Va. He also leaves behind the lights of his life, his grandchildren: Tre ("Tate"), Gabriella ("Gabber") and boyfriend Trey, Layton, Zeke, Lexi, Abby, Taylor, Paisley, Harmony, Skylar, Addison, Vinnie and Jayden.

He is also survived by his sister, Bernice Schmidt; his brother, Rod Schmidt and wife, Ann; and his sister-in-law, Beth Schmidt, all of Hagerstown, Md.; as well as numerous extended family members; his beloved dogs, Delilah and Big Mack; and his former student, Terrance, who became like a son to him, along with Terrance's family.

He was known for being ornery in the most lovable way and was a legendary bullshitter who could spin a story so convincingly that you'd never know where the truth ended and the tale began. His quick wit, stubborn streak and larger-than-life personality left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of sharing the road—or a conversation—with him. He will be deeply missed, but his stories, laughter and legacy will continue to ride on through the lives of those he touched.

In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated, and there will be no funeral or formal services. His family finds comfort in knowing they are honoring the choice he made.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to share stories, laughter and cherished memories in remembrance of the one-of-a-kind man he was.
