Burlington, WV - Cheryl Louise Smith, of Dry Run Road, Burlington, W.Va., beloved wife, devoted mother, loving Nana, cherished friend, and respected businesswoman, passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Va. She was 65 years old.
Born on September 14, 1959, in Wash., DC. Cheryl was the daughter of the late Eugene Allen "Sleepy" Thompson and Edna Mae (Nyman) Thompson, both of whom she now joins in eternal rest. She also was welcomed by her grandson, Brayden Lee Smith who became an angel in 2013; her "bonus" mother-in-law, Charlene Smith and her "bonus" father-in-law, Lansing Naylor. Throughout her life, Cheryl touched the lives of many with her unwavering strength, compassion, and dedication to her family, community, and faith.
Cheryl leaves behind a legacy of love and service. She is survived by her devoted husband of 38 years, Brian L. Smith; her daughter, Hillery L. Glass and husband Cody; and her son, Thayer L. Smith and wife Ashley, all of Burlington. She was a proud grandmother, known affectionately as Nana to, T. Camden Glass, Hayden L. Glass, Adalyn M. Smith, Ethan M. Glass and Dakota J. Dove. She is also survived by two sisters, Jeanne Jones and Amy Parrish; her father-in-law, who became her father figure, Calvin L. Smith and friend Vada Harper of Keyser; and her mother-in-law, Constance S. Naylor of Cumberland, Md. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family and friends.
A diligent and accomplished individual, Cheryl was a 1977 graduate of Parkdale High School in Riverdale, Md., and attended Frostburg State College. She pursued a fulfilling career path in the insurance industry, being employed as an insurance agent with State Farm Agencies in both Keyser, W.Va. and Everett, Pa. as well as Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She also worked in the business office with the City of Keyser before becoming co-owner and operator with her husband of Smith Funeral Homes in Keyser and Burlington, W.Va.. Cheryl was deeply involved in her community as a dedicated and active member of the Duling Community Church, serving as treasurer of the Trinity Keyser Charge of the United Methodist Church, and contributing her time and expertise to various organizations as board member including the Wepco Federal Credit Union and the Keyser Little League Board. She also was a member of Chapter # 191, Women of the Moose, Keyser and was an associate member of the West Virginia Funeral Directors Association.
Known for her unwavering faith, Cheryl found strength and solace in her relationship with Jesus. Her positive attitude, resilience, and unconditional love for her family were hallmarks of her character. She was a woman of great determination and perseverance, always striving to provide comfort and support to those around her. She faced many trials and hardships throughout her life, but her strong will, tenacity and her faith in her Lord Jesus Christ was always for her, that "still, small voice." Her favorite pastimes in life were her shopping excursions, vacationing at the beach and cruising with Brian. Anytime she could travel anywhere with her family, she was in her glory.
Friends and loved ones are invited to pay their respects at the visitations to be held at the Smith Funeral Home, Burlington Chapel, on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel on Thursday, May 29, 2025 from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Mt. Zion Church on Knobley Road in Keyser on Friday, May 30, 2025 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Brenda Shreve and Pastor Jerry Eisenhour officiating. The family will also receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow at the Duling Cemetery, Cutoff Road, Keyser.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Duling Community Church, 3064 Dry Run Road, Burlington, W.Va. 26710 in honor of Cheryl's commitment to her faith community.
Cheryl Louise Smith will be fondly remembered for her kindness, grace, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. She leaves behind a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her, and her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to have her in their lives.
