Keyser, WV - Christina Suzanne Cawley, of Knobley Road, Keyser, W.Va., known to her loved ones as Suzanne, gracefully passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025, at UPMC Western Maryland in Cumberland, Md., at the age of 77.
She was born on Dec. 19, 1947, in Highland Park, Michigan, to her beloved parents, the late H. Stuart Knight and Betty Louise (Cooley) Knight. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, William Knight of St. Louis, Mo. and John Knight of Nokesville, Va.; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Mulligan of Silver Spring, Md.
Suzanne's legacy lives on through her surviving family members, including her devoted husband of nearly 39 years, Corneilus B. Cawley; her stepdaughter, Heather Cawley of Edwardsville, Pa.; her brother, Robert Knight and wife Joanne of Tucson, Ariz.; her sister, Barbara Powell of North Chesterfield, Va.; brother-in-law, Billy Mulligan of Silver Spring; sister-in-law, Cathy Moran and husband Joe of Carbondale, Pa. She also is survived by a niece, Jacquelyn Persons and husband Sam of Richmond, Va.; nephew, Zachery Powell of Richmond; two grandnieces, Emilia and Clara Persons; and her Yorkie companions, "Casey" and "Abbey."
A dedicated educator, Suzanne was employed as a supervisor of education with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and retired in 2001 as a volunteer program coordinator. Her passion for teaching led her to work in inner-city schools in Detroit, Mich., juvenile facilities, and eventually within the prison system. Her impact on countless lives through education is immeasurable.
Outside of her professional life, Suzanne was an accomplished quilter, showcasing her talent and creativity through her membership in two quilting guilds, Creative Needles and Schoolhouse Quilters. Her quilts were not only pieces of art but also expressions of love and care for those around her.
Suzanne's personal traits of kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to her loved ones set her apart. Her warm smile and compassionate heart touched the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
The family will gather to celebrate Suzanne's life on Monday, June 9, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel.
Inurnment will take place in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Wilkes-Barre, PA, honoring her memory and legacy.
