Dade City, Florida - Colleen Elizabeth (Mersing) Brodie, 91, of Dade City, Fla., and formerly of Frostburg, Md., was welcomed into Heaven by her savior and her family on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024, at the Gulfside Hospice Center, Zephryhills, Fla. Born Jan. 17, 1933, in Thomas, W.Va., Colleen was the daughter of the late Walter and Lillian (Niner) Mersing. She was also preceded in death by her life partner, Bernard Eisler; her husband, Andrew Brodie; her brothers, Ronald and David Mersing; her nephew, "Little" David Mersing; and her sister-in-law, Ethel Mersing. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Colleen was a graduate of Beall High School. She retired from Shannon Shoes Store, Frostburg, Md. after 25 years. She then chose to work at the Hallmark Store, Frostburg, Md. because she missed seeing all her fellow Frostburg residents and friends. She loved children, always joining her daughters when they were young and the McCulloh Street neighborhood kids for a game of kick ball, hopscotch or trick or treating. She volunteered as youth group leader at Salem United Church of Christ, Frostburg, Md. She also volunteered for many years as the leader of the teen group at the Frostburg Community Center.
She was an active member of Ferndale Baptist Church, Ferndale, Fla., even ironing the altar cloths for services at her community clubhouse. She was a resident of Elevated Estates Edwinola ALF, Dade City, Fla., since May 2023 to be closer to her daughter, Alana and "son" Wayne. Prior to that, she was a resident at Ridgecrest Resort, Leesburg, Fla. for over 20 happy years, always volunteering and helping her community.
She was a true woman of God her whole life and was always our "Social Butterfly". She will always be known for her laugh and loving, kind nature, always smiling even in the tough times. She was an amazing seamstress all her life and even made several hand sewn quilts. She was a voracious reader, always a book near her, and took great pride in completely reading the Bible.
Colleen is survived by her daughter and caregiver, Alana (Brodie) Nicol and husband Wayne (Nick) Nicol, San Antonio, Fla.; her daughter, Londa (Brodie) Walker and husband Marty Walker, Frostburg, Md.; grandson, Adam Nicol and wife Kathy, Cresaptown, Md.; granddaughter, Bridget (Troutman) Houdersheldt and husband Zach, Jacksonville, Fla.; grandson, David Walker, Frostburg, Md.; great-grandchildren, Codi Nicol and fiancé Tina McClellan, Atticus Nicol, Layla (Grammy's Runner) Houdersheldt, Nash (Grammy's Big Boy) Houdersheldt, Elizabeth Walker and RoseMary Walker. Family and friends will be received at Sowers Funeral Home, Frostburg, Md., on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; the funeral services will follow at 12 p.m., with Pastor Bruce McBride officiating. Colleen was such a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend and we will all miss her terribly. But we know she is dancing with Jesus in Heaven. We were blessed to have her, our Dancing Queen.
