Frostburg, Maryland - Daniel Gene Yates "Danny," 71 years old, of Frostburg, Md., passed away Saturday, May 30, 2026, at home after a three-year battle with cancer.

Born in Frostburg in 1954, Danny was the beloved son of Betty Jean (Winebrenner) Yates, of Frostburg, and the late Junior Lee "Crow" Yates.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Nancy Ann (Alkire) Yates, whom he married on Sept. 27, 1975. Together they raised two sons, David Yates and wife Kara, Derek Yates and special friend Jenn Staggs and her two kids, Alex and Kailyn, all of Frostburg. Danny was the proud grandfather of Cody, Emmalee, Kylyn and Brenton, who brought him endless joy and a sense of purpose.

He is also survived by his sister, Sandy Ayers of Lavale and brother; brother-in-law, Steven and wife Penny Alkire of Lonaconing; Mark Alkire and special friend Becky of Cumberland; sister-in-law, Vicky Shockey of Lonaconing; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by brothers-in-law, John Ayers and Steve Shockey.

Danny was a proud graduate of Valley High School, Class of 1972. He spent many years as a self-employed truck driver alongside his father. While raising his two sons, he enjoyed watching and coaching, karate, baseball, football, golf and bowling. His passion was for hunting with his father and two sons.

He enjoyed many nights with family and friends trap shooting. Later in life, he spent countless hours researching his family history, creating a beautiful family tree.

Instead of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research. Danny lived with Parkinson's disease in recent years, facing each day with grit, humor and a deep belief in helping others. Supporting this foundation is a way to honor his fight, his hope and unwavering spirit.

Danny admired the courage of those living with Parkinson's and believed in the power of science, storytelling and community to make a difference. Supporting this foundation is a way to carry forward his spirit of generosity and hope.

Family and friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Seth Wharton officiating.
