Don Henry Schade Obituary

Cumberland, Maryland - Don Henry Schade, 94, of LaVale, Md., passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Cumberland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born on July 11, 1931, in Cumberland, Md., Mr. Schade was the son of the late Justice Henry Schade and Irma Lorraine (Dougherty) Schade-Phillips.

He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Norma Jean Schade; a cousin, Mary Dawn Buckley; his sisters-in-law, Shirley Bratt, Ronnie Tucker and Linda Trost; and his brothers-in-law, whom he treated like brothers, Pat Trost and Lee Tucker; as well as several nieces. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Don attended Allegany High School and was an honorary member of the Fort Hill High School Class of 1952 through his work on the reunion committee with his wife for many years. He was a United States Army veteran who served in Germany during the Korean War.

Don started working as a truck driver for PPG, then went on to drive for the Celanese, Stroehmann Bakery, RC Bottling Co., Cumberland Steele, and also the mail truck for Bo Fagan. Lastly, he was a school bus driver for Allegany County Public Schools. He also happily drove the bus for the Allegany High School volleyball team, for which he became affectionately known as "Pappy".

Don was a longtime member of New Covenant United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Bedford Road Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years. He truly loved being a fireman and being involved with the fire department.

Don remained active throughout his entire life and was able to ride his bike daily on the Allegheny Bike Trail until he was 85. He was quite the jokester and always had a great time teasing his family and caregivers. He loved doing puzzles and always had one out on the card table.

He also enjoyed reading Western stories and books, watching "Family Feud" and watching the Washington Commanders—whether they were winning or losing.

Don loved all trains and always set up a Christmas yard every year below the tree. He enjoyed riding the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad train to Frostburg.

He loved and cherished his wife Norma, his family, friends and neighbors; he will be sorely missed.

Don is survived by his daughters, Donna Farrar and husband Ed, and Shari Washington and husband Steve; his grandchildren, Jessica (Farrar) Smith and husband Steve, Whitney (Farrar) Probst and husband Dakota, Alexa Spriggs and fiancé Zach, Isaiah Spriggs, and Stevie Washington; his great-grandchildren, Isla, Harper, Lohen, Acen and Tripp; a brother-in-law, Bill Bratt; and a very special niece, Stephanie Trost.

Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, MD, www.adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 10 to 11 a.m. Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard at 11 a.m. A memorial service will begin immediately after, with the Rev. Richard Jewell officiating.

Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap at a later date.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Alexa Neef and Cumberland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for all the care and love provided.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in his name to Bedford Road Volunteer Fire Department, 13200 Bedford Road N.E., Cumberland, MD 21502.
