Doris Ivalene Kessell Obituary

Swanton, MD - SWANTON [mdash] Doris Ivalene Kessell of Swanton (formerly of Cumberland) passed away Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, at Garrett Regional Medical Center.

Born in Cumberland on July 29, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Harry Ernest Adams and Nora Evelyn (Walters) Adams. Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Ernest C. Kessell Jr.; her siblings, Paul Adams, Maxine Zehrbach, Wilma Smith, and Helen Wilson; and daughter-in-law, Sharon (Files) Kessell.

She is survived by her children - two sons, James L. Kessell and fiancé, Bonnie Rowley, of Cumberland; and Steven C. Kessell of La Plata; a daughter, Lois Ann Weeks, and husband, Roland, of Swanton; and four grandsons, Leland Kessell of Lonaconing; Garrett Kessell of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Travis Kessell of Harrisonburg, Va.; and Drake Kessell and wife, Shannon, of West Palm Beach, Fla. Two sisters also survive her, Wanda Wickard of McKinney, Texas; and Francis Klavuhn of Cumberland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doris was a 1950 graduate of Fort Hill High School where she was a standout player in both softball and basketball. She played in the Queen City Softball League where she pitched for the 1950 champion East Side Maids. She was a graduate of Allegany College of Maryland and Frostburg State University.

She worked for the Allegany County Board of Education as a special education teacher for 23 years. She was lucky enough to walk to school for her entire career at Pennsylvania Avenue School and South Penn Elementary.

She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Cumberland and attended the Oakland Church of the Nazarene when she and Ernie moved to Garrett County in 1999.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Adams Family Funeral Home, 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland. Friends may visit one hour before the service. Officiating clergy will be Reverend Richard A. Wilson of Hagerstown Church of the Nazarene (Pastor Emeritus).

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
