Dorothy W. Metzger
LAVALE - Dorothy Williams "Dort" Metzger, 97, of LaVale, died at Frostburg Village Nursing Home on Friday, Jan. 10, 2020.
Born on Oct. 11, 1922, in Cumberland, Mrs. Metzger was the daughter of the late Webster L. and Dessie Mae (Cherry) Williams. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, J. Galen Metzger; their daughter, Molly Metzger Edelen; her sisters, Dessie W. Sagle and the Sister Jane Teresa; and a special nephew, Richard R. Sagle.
Mrs. Metzger was a graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1940, and Catherman's Business School. After graduating from Catherman's, she worked as secretary in the lineman's garage at Potomac Edison Co. before beginning her career as a medical secretary in the office of Dr. W. Alfred Van Ormer. She balanced many years as a homemaker with her operation of National Road Kennels, a cat and dog boarding business she and her husband owned and operated in LaVale for 35 years.
She was a member of Centre Street and LaVale United Methodist Churches, where she served on numerous committees, taught Sunday school, and led the youth fellowship. She was a Girl Scout leader and PTA president. She was a life member and past president of the Garden Club of Cumberland, a life member of the Allegany County Historical Society, a founding member of the Braddock Run Watershed Association, and a member of the LaVale Civic Improvement Association for many years.
She had a lifelong curiosity for learning, was an avid reader, welcoming friend and hostess, accomplished Bridge player, devoted wife, loving mother and magical grandma, an exceptional cook, baker, costume maker, gardener, and confidant.
Surviving are her children, Ann Potter and husband, Jerry, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Brad Metzger and wife, Barbara, LaVale; and son-in-law, Warren Frederick, Mathias, W.Va. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, Brian Potter and wife, Maria, and their daughter, Riley, Steven Potter and wife, Mariana, Kate Metzger and friend, Nick Taylor, and Daniel Metzger and friend, Courtney Taylor, and Lonnie, Jacob, and Caroline Edelen.
Friends may visit the family at Adams Family Funeral Home (www.adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com), 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday, Jan. 17, 2020, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, from noon to 2 p.m.
The service will follow at the funeral home at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Frankie Revell officiating.
Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Baltimore Pike.
Pallbearers will be Brian Potter, Steven Potter, Daniel Metzger, Lonnie Edelen, Jacob Edelen, and Nick Taylor.
The family thanks the nurses, aides, and staff in therapy, activities and administration at Frostburg Village for the loving and compassionate care Dort received in both Assisted Living and New Horizons.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dort's memory to either the LaVale United Methodist Church Food Pantry, 565 National Highway, LaVale, MD 21502; or the Union Rescue Mission in Cumberland, Post Office Box 1614, Cumberland, MD 21501-1614.

Caring for your mother truly was an honor. Meeting your family and becoming so close was also a distinct privilege. Dort was a kind, sweet woman. She had a smile that could make you light up with joy. I'm so very sorry for your loss. May your family find comfort and peace of mind during this heart wrenching time.
