Cumberland, MD - Dr. Jesus H. Tan, 78, of Cumberland, passed away surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, at UPMC Western Maryland after a brief illness.
Born December 25, 1947, in Leyte, Philippines, he was the son of the late Tan Eh Pang and Ho On Ty. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Erlinda Chua Tan; his second wife, Sandra Sarvida Tan; his brothers, San Ben Tan and Bing Tan; and a sister, Dr. Saturnina "Nina" Tan Chang.
In the Philippines, Jesus graduated from the University of San Carlos followed by the Cebu Institute of Medicine, completing his doctorate of medicine in 1972. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Beekman Downtown Hospital in New York City, also serving as Chief Medical Resident.
In 1978, he moved to Cumberland, and began practicing medicine, and started his own practice in 1983 with his sister, Dr. Saturnina Chang. He has cared for patients at Sacred Heart Hospital, Frostburg Community Hospital, Western Maryland Health System, and UPMC, as well as many nursing homes in the Tri-State area and the Massie Unit for substance abuse treatment. He never stopped practicing medicine for his community.
Jesus enjoyed movies and traveling with his family, and of course food.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, Allegany County Medical Society, and the Maryland State Medical Society.
Surviving are his children, Dr. Jeremias Chua Tan and wife, Dr. Hanita Oh-Tan; Ethel Tan Masten and husband, Stephen; Emma Tan Chan and husband, Gaston; Joshua Sarvida Tan and partner, Liana Ip; six grandchildren, Olivia Tan, Zachary Tan, Jacob Masten, Payton Masten, Kennedy Masten, and Anastasia Chan; three sisters, Conchita Tan Yap, Pampila Tan; Juliana Tan Go and husband, Sotero; and his large extended family including numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his companion, Sue Winkler.
Visitation will be at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, MD, Sunday, Feb. 01, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. A wake service will take place during the evening visitation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 201 N Centre St, Cumberland, MD, on Monday, Feb. 02 at 10 a.m. celebrated by Fr. Mark Carter, OFM Cap.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Cumberland.
