Dr. Sean Leo McCagh Obituary

Dr. Sean Leo McCagh, 60, of Cumberland, passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 2021, at UPMC Western Maryland Medical Center due to COVID-19 complications.

Born in Cumberland on Dec. 30, 1960, he was the son of the late Francis "Frank" and Catherine (Blake) McCagh. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul and Joan Murphy.

Sean was a local dermatologist and practiced for 25 years in Cumberland. He was a partner at Western Maryland Dermatology.

Sean was a 1979 graduate of Bishop Walsh High School. Following high school, he graduated from Mount St. Mary's College.

After receiving his bachelor's degree, Sean attended Georgetown University Medical School. He served his residency in dermatology at West Virginia University School of Medicine.

After completing his residency, he returned to Cumberland joining the practice of his brother, Mike McCagh and his partner, Ken Roberts.

Sean's heart was in his community. He volunteered as the team physician for Allegany High School football team for several years.

He was the recipient of the Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot award for extraordinary work assisting underserved members of society and the Community Service Award from the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce.

He organized and began the annual Hooley Plunge which originally benefitted the local YMCA Ice Rink. Now in its 17th year, the Hooley Plunge has raised over $1.5 million for Special Olympics of Allegany County (Maryland) and other local programs for the developmentally disabled.

Sean was a member of Wamba Caravan 89 Order of the Alhambra and Western Maryland Medical Association.

Sean was happiest when busy working on the Irish Willows Farm or The 1812 Brewery, regaling patrons with his story telling, love of local history and brewery tours. Sean found the most joy around the firepit or behind the bar when surrounded by friends and family.

Sean is survived by his wife of 30 years, Theresa "Terri" (Murphy) McCagh; three sons, Michael M. Lastig, Cory M. McCagh, and Casey M. McCagh; brothers, Mike McCagh and wife, Lea, Brian McCagh and wife, Terry, Denny McCagh and wife, Kim, Tim McCagh, and Kevin McCagh; sisters, Kay Head and husband, Doug, Erin Morrissey and husband, Vincent "Buzzy", and Bridget Engles; brother-in-law, Mike Murphy and wife, Susan; aunt, Helene Blake.

Sean is also survived by many special nieces and nephews who referred to him as their "FUS" - Favorite Uncle Sean.
