EDWARD F. SHAFFER Obituary
Ed was born at home on Nov. 25, 1931 to Gertrude Rebecca (Fleming) Shaffer and Edward Amos Shaffer.
Ed graduated from Hyndman High (Bedford County, Pa.) where he was an All-Star pitcher on the high school baseball championship team. He played clarinet and tenor saxophone in the band, sang in the glee club, and also enjoyed roller skating, hunting and fishing.
After graduation, his first job was in the stockroom at GC Murphy in Cumberland. After attending Baltimore Institute of Photography, Ed was employed at Cumberland Engraving Company as a photoengraver.
He married Doris Marie Kuhn, his high school sweetheart and love of his life, on Feb. 9, 1952, and they enjoyed 40 wonderful years together. As a newlywed, Ed was drafted into the Army in December 1952, and went through basic at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., before training at Fort Riley, Kan., to become a photo-interpreter. He used those skills during a 13-month tour in Korea before receiving an honorable discharge from the military.
After the war, Ed worked at an engraving shop in Greensburg, Pa. commuting back and forth to see his beloved Doris on weekends. Fortunately, he found work closer to home through the GI Bill in Hagerstown, servicing calculators with Marchant Calculators. After 17 years, he transitioned to Prudential Insurance Company, where he earned several "Salesman of the Month" awards before his retirement in 1990.
Ed and Doris started ballroom dancing in 1966 and continued until her untimely death in 1992. Ed then became the dance instructor's partner for two years before meeting a special lady, Dotty Wright, with whom he enjoyed dancing for many years in three different dance clubs.
Ed enjoyed writing what he called "Silly Poems," and leaves a collection of well over 300. He had a life-long passion for photography, serving as president of Hagerstown Photographic Society for several years, and won numerous awards for his photographs.
Ed was a member of Washington Square United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where he taught the Young Adult Sunday School Class during the 60s and 70s. He was a life member of VFW post 1599, and a member of American Legion Post 42 and Hagerstown Elks 378.
Ed is survived by two daughters, Barbara Lynn Resh (and her husband, James M. Resh Jr.) of Chambersburg, and Teri Shaffer Herl (and her husband, Howard E. Herl) of Glendale, Calif. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Jackie R. Moore (and her husband, Alan S. Moore), and Jami L. Wagner (and her husband, Ryan T. Wagner), both of Chambersburg; and two great-granddaughters, Alaina Paige Moore and Sydney Leigh Moore. He is also survived by his very special lady friend, Dotty Wright of Shippensburg, Pa.
