Cumberland, MD - Eugene "Gene" Walter Miller, 80, of Cumberland, Md. passed away in his sleep at home on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
Born May 3, 1945 in Cumberland, Md. he was the son of the late George A. Miller and Mary A. (Mummert) Miller.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Richard Allen Miller; sister, Janetta Markley (Delbert); brothers, James Miller, who was his twin, Carl Miller, George Miller Jr, infant brother, Glenwood Miller; and his father and mother-in-law, Edward Eugene Chaney and Marguerite (Goss) Chaney.
He was a graduate of Fort Hill high school class of 1964. Gene proudly served in the United States Navy stationed in Little Creek, Virginia on the USS Rushmore. He had the opportunity to travel abroad visiting many foreign countries while serving. After completing six years in the US Navy, he worked at the Kelly Springfield tire company for 23 years until they closed operations. After that, he worked for Hunter Douglas for 25 years and retired August 2014. He also spent several years working part-time at D & S Distributors.
Gene was a member of the Seabees, VVA #172 Cumberland, Md., the VFW #6452 Ridgeley, W.Va. and the Cumberland Outdoor Club. He was a man of great faith and a member of Christ United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Lois, J. (Chaney) Miller; daughters, Sheri Lyn Miller and Crystal Jean Miller; grandchildren, Austin, Michael Tippen and wife, Sam, Dustin E. Tippen and girlfriend, Chloe Bonifacio, Cailin J. Miller and Cayden J. Miller. Gene spoke often of and was so excited that he was going to be a great-grandfather to Oliver Michael Tippen, due to arrive at the end of July.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Martha, (Miller) Scherr; and many nieces, nephews and family members.
In his free time, Gene enjoyed playing Setback cards at the Cumberland Outdoor Club, bowling both 10 pin and duck pins, watching his favorite sports teams the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, loved spending time and playing with his grandchildren and frequent visits from his grand-doggy, Sweetie Pie, who loved to take naps with him.
Gene was a hard worker and wonderful man with a kind and generous heart who loved the Lord, his family and his country. He was loved more than words can express and will be sorely missed.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland on Monday, June 30 from 10 to 12 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12 p.m. with the Reverend Harold McClay officiating.
Interment will be in MD State Veteran's Cemetery, Rocky Gap at 1 p.m. Military Honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172.
Pallbearers will be Michael and Dustin Tippen, Byron Logsdon, Gary Keller, Jon Mason and Billy Tippen.
