Cumberland, MD - Gary Joseph (Fenoglietto) Phillips, 75, passed away peacefully on Feb. 21, 2026, in Cumberland, Md., with his beloved wife, Ann, at his side. Born on April 29, 1950, in Huntington, W.Va., he was the son of James J. (Fenoglietto) Phillips and Shirley M. Bennett (Fenoglietto) Phillips. Gary lived a life defined by an abiding love of music and an irrepressible passion for the skies.

Gary earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree in music performance from West Virginia University, laying the foundation for a distinguished and dedicated career in music education. Over the years, he shared his expertise and enthusiasm with students at West Virginia University, CCBC Essex, Allegany College of Maryland, and most recently Frostburg State University. His commitment to his students and colleagues left an enduring mark on all who learned from him.

A proud veteran, Gary served in the Armed Forces during the Vietnam era. His service reflected his dedication to his country and a deep belief in the preservation of freedom and democracy.

Among Gary's greatest joys was the art of soaring. As a skilled glider pilot, he found freedom and exhilaration in the skies above the beautiful mountains of Western Maryland. An anchor member of the Cumberland Soaring Group, he spent countless weekends at the field — flying, and trading stories with fellow pilots at the end of the day. The friendships he built there were among the most treasured of his life.

Music was the other great constant of Gary's life. His journey as a percussionist took him across a remarkable range of traditions and genres — from directing marching bands and performing in reggae and jazz ensembles, to studying African balafon and marimba. In his later years, he found fresh delight in playing Irish music on accordion and penny whistle. He was an equally enthusiastic listener, with artists like Jacob Collier and BabyMetal among his current favorites. Whether performing or listening, music brought Gary a sense of fulfillment that never dimmed. He maintained long-lasting friendships with fellow musicians throughout his life, connections that brought him immeasurable joy.

Gary is survived by his devoted wife and partner of many years, Ann Townsell; his brothers, Danny Phillips and his wife Leslie, Randy Phillips and his wife Linda, and Kevin Phillips; and his sister, Karen "Red" Fenoglietto. He is also lovingly survived by his nieces, Caroline and Kiera; his nephews, Richard, Mark, Randy, Clint, Corey, Ross, Chase; and great-nephews, Isaac and Lucas.
