George Benjamin Gilmore
September 7, 1933 - July 10, 2026
George Benjamin Gilmore, 92, of Mount Savage, Md., went home to be with his Lord on Friday, July 10, 2026.
Born Sept. 7, 1933, in Traverse City, Mich., Mr. Gilmore was the son of the late Bracken Gilmore and Thyrza (Jarrett) Gilmore. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Gerald "Jerry" Gilmore; a grandson, Jesse Davis; and a son-in-law, Scott Stonestreet.
George was a graduate of Michigan State University and a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. He retired from DNR as a forester with 30 years of service. He had a true love for the woods, and after retirement, he worked as an independent contractor in West Virginia, and also for Columbia Gas.
George was a former member of Trinity Assembly of God and attended Cornerstone Baptist Church. He was a member and past president of the LaVale Lions Club and a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow. He also was a member of many professional organizations, including: the American Professional Forester's Association, the Society of American Foresters and the Maryland Forestry Association.
George was a Harley enthusiast and rider, riding until the age of 85. He made several trips across the country and everywhere in between. He belonged to the Harley Owners Group and the Christian Motorcyclist Association, as well as the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #48.
He also enjoyed bowling on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with "The Golden Oldies." George was a man devoted to the Lord, his family and his community, and he will be dearly missed.
George is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cathy Gilmore; his children, Joseph Gilmore and wife Carol, Andrew Gilmore and wife Karen, Karen Davis and friend John Ludeman, Colleen Calcamp and husband Jake, Kathie Shriver and friend Owen, Elisabeth Stonestreet, and Caryl Spivey and husband Thomas; his brothers, John Gilmore and wife Adeline, and Roy Gilmore and wife Mary; as well as 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, MD, on Monday, July 13, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m. The LaVale Lions Club will conduct at memorial service at 6:45 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 11 a.m., with Pastor David Hattenfield officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.

Plant a tree: How does it work
When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.
An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.
After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.
Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.

January - May
Planting will take place in Spring or Summer of the same year.
June - December
Planting will take place in Spring of the following year.
