George Abner Hott Obituary

Moorefield, WV - George Abner Hott, 97, of Moorefield, W.Va., passed peacefully on July 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

A lifelong resident of Moorefield, George was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, coach, veteran, teacher, and friend. He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Betty Carter Hott; his parents, Donald and Edna Hott; five siblings; and his bonus grandson, James Brady.

A gifted athlete, George earned All-State honors in football, basketball, and baseball at Moorefield High School. He later played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and served in the Korean Conflict. At Shepherd College, he co-captained the school's first undefeated football team, was twice named All-Conference, and was inducted into the Shepherd College Hall of Fame. After graduation, he was invited to the Washington Redskins' spring tryout camp but chose to return home to teach and coach.

George spent more than two decades mentoring young athletes and was honored as Coach of the Year in both football and baseball. He later served as Sheriff of Hardy County and was named the Spirit of Hardy County. His faith and community were central to his life, and he was a devoted member of Duffey Memorial Church, the VFW, and the American Legion.

He is survived by his children, Sherri (Joseph), George (Karen), Richard (Vickie), and Kelly (Bill); seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his brother, Wendell (Betty); and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

In his final days, George looked forward to reuniting with his beloved "Honeypot" in heaven, fully confident he would find her on "the swing". His legacy of love, service, and leadership will live on in the countless lives he touched.

A public Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2025 from 2 to 4 p.m., at Misty Mountain Event Barn in Fisher, W.Va.
