Cumberland, MD - J. Nelson "Sonny" Willison Jr., 91, of Cumberland, Md., passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the Lions Rehab Center.

Born on June 18, 1935, in Cumberland, Md., Mr. Willison was the son of the late James Nelson Willison Sr. and Margaret (Griffith) Willison. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy E. Willison, in 2017; a daughter, Karen Jane Willison; a sister, Rose Ann Hillary; and his sons-in-law, Geoffrey Wheeler and Timothy Lykins.

Nelson retired from Potomac Edison with 37 years of service. Nelson was a lifelong learner and enjoyed reading and studying his Bible, as well as theology books, preparing Bible study classes and singing in the choir. He spent time visiting the sick and their families and led prison ministry. He was also willing to host guest speakers and missionaries in his home.

In his free time, he loved to be outside in his garden, walking and hiking, traveling and visiting his family. At age 80, he began sailing and enjoyed the lake life. He was a member of the Mountain Amateur Radio Club-K3DEE, was a former member of Cumberland Bible Church and was a current member of Calvary Bible Church.

Nelson is survived by his wife, Leah Bohrer; his daughters, Doris Wheeler, Beverley Bassett and husband David, Carla Lykins, and Beth Langley and husband John; and his brother, Stephen Willison and wife Sandy; as well as 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Friends and family will be received at Calvary Bible Church on Monday, June 29, 2026, from noon to 1 p.m. Refreshments will be provided during this time. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m., with Pastor Greg Miller and Pastor Ken Korns officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
