Janet Mae Fravel Obituary
Cumberland, MD - CUMBERLAND [mdash] Janet Mae Fravel, 88, of Cumberland, passed away June 2, 2026, at Doey House, Hagerstown.
Born Jan. 15, 1938, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Victor Earl and Nellie May (Marston) McCauley. She was also preceded in death by two sisters who both died in infancy, Ruth Madge and Betty Jean; her wonderful husband, Homer H. Fravel, who passed away on Nov. 6, 2003; and one stepdaughter, Faye Yvonne Smith.
She is survived by one stepson, Homer Eugene Hornsby, and wife, Kathleen; one stepdaughter, Teena Marie Reed; four step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; and one cousin.
She was a 1956 graduate of Allegany High School and a 1957 graduate of Catherman's Business School, Cumberland.
Janet worked at various secretarial jobs before opening Fravel Floor Sanding and Finishing, a partnership business with her husband, in 1981. They retired March 31, 1996, upon selling their business.
She moved from Cumberland twice for brief periods, but came back because she loved her hometown and did not want to live anywhere else. Janet worked in feral cat rescue, providing foster care for them and placing them in permanent homes.
Genealogy was another passion that resulted in extensive research on her family history. Getting a computer in 2004 and exploring the many aspects of it kept her in touch with family and friends.
At her request, there will be no viewing or service. A private burial will take place at Greenmount Cemetery.
The Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A. is handling arrangements.
