Jean A. Douthitt


Jean A. Douthitt, 86, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., died Aug. 20, 2019, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Daughter of the late Oscar and Ella (Daughenbaugh) Marker, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Douthitt; sister, Ella Mae Northcraft and husband, Gail; and infant brother, James Edward Marker.
Jean was born in Fort Ashby on Dec. 29, 1932, graduated from Fort Ashby High School in 1949, and from Sacred Heart School of Nursing in 1952.
Jean was employed as a registered nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital for 12 years and for the next 35 years at Braddock Medical Group in Cumberland. She enjoyed membership in the Sacred Heart Nurses Alumni.
Jean was a member of the Fort Ashby Lioness Club and had served as treasurer and president. She also volunteered at Vineyard Home for Mentally Challenged Adults. She enjoyed RV camping and traveling with her family (all 50 states), visiting lighthouses, and spending time with family and friends at DECH Retreat, Mount Storm Lake. Jean and Bernard enjoyed attending all of the events in which their grandchildren participated, and she continued to do so after his death in 2018.
Jean was a faithful and active member of Annunciation of Our Lord Catholic Church, Fort Ashby, having served as lector, cantor, Eucharistic minister, choir member, and as church organist for a time.
Jean is survived by her children and their spouses, Susan and David Bledsoe, John and Mary Douthitt, Chris and Renee Douthitt, Phil Douthitt, Paul andTracy Douthitt, all of Fort Ashby; grandchildren, Mallory and wife, Courtney, Sean, Jessica and husband, Troy, Jamie, Jasmine and husband, Brandon, Oliver and wife, Taylor, Lauren, Taylor, Makenna, Nathan; great-grandchildren, Quaid, Ava, Jaiden, Jayla, Silas, Everly, Gatlin; sister and best friend, Linda Hoey and husband, Jim.
At Jean's request, she will be cremated.
Family and friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday, Aug. 23, 2019, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. The Fort Ashby Lioness Club will conduct a service at 7:15 p.m. A Christian wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
A memorial Mass will be conducted at Annunciation of Our Lord Catholic Church, WV-28, Fort Ashby, on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019, at 11 a.m.
Inurnment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery.

Fond memories of growing up having Jean and Bernard and family in the neighborhood. Especially grateful for having her around to check in on Mom,Dad, Bill and when I wasn’t available.
