Cumberland, MD - Joseph M. Bishop, 86, of Cumberland, Md., passed away peacefully at home April 3, 2026.

He was born June 22, 1939, in Frostburg, Md., to the late Matthew and Nondis Philomena Sabers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, John "Jack" Kunis (Frances), Bill Kunis (Myrna), Delores Dick (John), Carmen Bishop, Frank Bishop (Marge); sister-in-law, Alice Saber; nephew, Rusty Kunis; and niece, Jamie Bishop.

Joe graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1957. He served his country by joining the U.S. Army for two years; he took a year to search for a career and then reenlisted with the Army for an additional four years. He then worked for the City of Cumberland for a year to support his family. Then, having been trained as a machinist with the service, he began a career with the railroad until his retirement.

His family was everything to him; he provided a wonderful home and was always present for all of them, especially their many events. He also loved raising his dogs, Max, Rocky and Daisy; if you're a stray dog near Joe's house, you were very lucky.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 65 years, Millie Bishop; children, Gina Bell and husband Brad, Joey Bishop and wife Susan, and Randy Bishop; grandchildren, Kristen, Joey, Aja, Matthew and Sarah; five great-grandchildren, James, Carlee, Adam Jr., Britney and Logan; and his brother, Terry Sabers; and his large extended family, including many nieces and nephews, and many friends.

In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated.

A visitation will take place at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday, April 15, from noon to 2 p.m., followed by a memorial service beginning at 2 p.m., with Chaplain David Hall officiating and military honors accorded by the American Legion Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
