Joseph E. Gilpin Sr., 80, of Miners Avenue, Frostburg, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, at UPMC-Western Maryland, Cumberland. Born on Aug. 21, 1944, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Howard E. Gilpin and Georgianna (Phillips) Gilpin.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Gilpin.
Joe was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. A graduate of Patterson High School, Baltimore, he worked as a Baltimore City police officer for 31 years. After retiring, he drove school buses locally. He loved to write and was an avid Baltimore Ravens and Orioles fan.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 38 years, Sandra (Cadwallader) Gilpin; three children, Joseph Gilpin Jr. and wife Diane of Baltimore, Timothy Gilpin of Pennsylvania and Jennifer Gilpin and Donald Maeby of Baltimore; four grandchildren, Joseph Gilpin, Ashlee Langley and husband Ethan, Reva Gilpin and Jonathan Maeby; six great-grandchildren; siblings, Rita "Sue" Bajkowski and husband Junior, and James Gilpin and wife Faye; sister-in-law, Ann Gilpin; special nieces, Shannon, Stephenie, and Sarah; and nephews, Lance, Matt, Jason, Steven, Nathaniel, and Jeremiah.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Midland. A funeral service will immediately follow at 4 p.m., with Pastor Kristin Beeman officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
