Joseph "Joe" Patrick Scarpelli Obituary

Cumberland, Maryland - Joseph "Joe" Patrick Scarpelli, 96, of Cumberland, Md., passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at home, surrounded by his family.


Born Dec. 27, 1929, in Frostburg, Md., Mr. Scarpelli was the son of the late Frank Scarpelli and Mildred (Licciardone) Scarpelli. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Carmel Scarpelli and Rose Coburn; and his first wife, Judy (Bramble) Scarpelli.


Joe is survived by his loving wife of 35 years this August, Karen (Duby) Scarpelli; his daughters, Patricia Robertazza and Jodi Squires (Matt); a stepson, Brett Gross Sr. (Alona); his grandchildren, Joshua Squires (Danielle), Hannah Digon (Simon), Victor Robertazza and girlfriend Jess Routzahn, Elizabeth Robertazza, Chelsea Sampson (Johnny), Damica Robinson (Issac) and Brett Gross Jr.; a sister, Mary Black; as well as two great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.


Joe was a graduate of Beall High School Class of 1948 and served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He was a member of the Farrady Post #24 American Legion, Frostburg, Md.


Joe had a strong passion for walking all over Frostburg, especially Beall High School.


When he wasn't walking, he could be found reading some of his favorite books by the authors Danielle Steel, Sidney Sheldon and James Patterson.


Joe never met a stranger and quickly became friends with anyone he met. He was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Notre Dame football.


Per his request, he donated his body to science, and services will be private.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in his name to the American Kidney Fund Inc., 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852; or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.


The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to UPMC Home Hospice and Comfort Keepers for the loving care and compassion they provided to Joe, as well as the VA for all the help they provided as well.
