Joyce Bestwick Macy
CUMBERLAND - Joyce Bestwick Macy, born April 25, 1926, in Cumberland, went home to the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 10.
Joyces parents had emigrated from England to join what was later known as the Celanese Corporation in 1923. She and sister Vera were both baptized and married in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
She graduated from Allegany High in 1943 and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 1947.
She returned to Cumberland to teach music at Allegany High School and loved teaching her students. It was there that she met and later married Allan D. Macy, a fun-loving, talented tenor.
She and Allan sang in the Emmanuel Episcopal choir through the 1960s, where Joyce also directed the choir. They transferred membership to the First Presbyterian Church, joining Allan's parents who had been long-time members. There they raised their four children and participated in music ministry for many years.
Joyce was an active member of the Cumberland Choral Society, and also the Music and Arts Club where she helped create the young musicians scholarship competition. The program continues to encourage aspiring vocal and instrumental musicians in grades 8-12.
She was a long-standing member of the PEO Sisterhood where she made many dear friends. She also served Meals on Wheels for many years.
Joyce was preceded in death by Allan, her loving husband of 53 years. And also by her sister, Vera Bestwick Willis.
She is survived by her brother-in-law, Rance R. Willis, of Alexandria, Va.; her children, Elizabeth Leigh Nelson, of Oregon City, Ore., Ellen M. Wallace and husband, Richard Wallace of Lutherville, Doug Macy and wife, Vicki McIntyre Macy, and John H. Macy and wife, Suzy Bridges Macy, all of Cumberland; grandchildren Adam and Nathan Leigh, Allan Wallace and Caroline Wallace Droke, Rob Macy, Ian Macy, and five great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 11 Washington St., Cumberland, MD 21502.
Family and friends are invited to a reception at the church following the service.
Instead of flowers, please make donations to the Union Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 1614, Cumberland, MD 21502.
