Cumberland, MD - Joyce Elaine (Turner) Stegmaier, 95, of Cumberland, passed away after a brief stay at Frostburg Rehab Center.

Born May 7, 1931, in Grantsville, Md., she was a daughter of the late Silas Ely "Mike" and Jessie Marie (LaRue Hawn) Turner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James George Stegmaier; brothers, Daniel Joseph "Joe" Turner (Betty) and Robert M. Turner; brother-in-law, Alvin Garland; nephew, Michael Robert Turner; and niece, Deborah Marie Colvin.

Joyce was a 1948 graduate of Grantsville High School and went on to complete her education at the Allegany Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1951. She began her career as a pediatric nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital, eventually moving on to psychiatric nursing before settling on the operating room, where she became the nursing supervisor. Eventually she left Sacred Heart and went to work at her husband's practice, where she ran the office.

Joyce and her husband were members of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Mountains Parish.

She enjoyed reading, completing crossword puzzles and researching her family's genealogy.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her son, James Michael Stegmaier; sister, Donna Marie Garland; niece and nephews, Cheryl Elaine Mitchell, Joseph Turner, Steven Turner and Gary Turner.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday, May 29, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday at 1 p.m., with Fr. Eric Gauchat, OFM, Cap., as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
