Frostburg, Maryland - Lois Ann Hughes was born on Jan. 16, 1935, in the small mining town of Eckhart, Md., to Jacob and Mary Hess. She attended Frost Elementary School and continued her education at Beall High School, laying the foundation for a life dedicated to family, service and community.
In 1951, Lois married George "Tars" Hughes. Soon after, the couple moved to a Texas Air Force Base with their 1-year-old child while Tars was stationed in Okinawa. Eventually, they returned to Frostburg, where they raised four more sons. Sadly, they lost their son Dennis to spinal meningitis.
Lois was deeply involved in her community. She volunteered at the Frostburg Little League concession stand and was a prominent member and volunteer at the Frostburg Ambulance Company, serving as an EMT from June 7, 1979, until the company was transferred to state control in 2019. Lois was elected vice president of the organization many times, formed close friendships, and was known for her countless stories.
Lois was very active in Saint John's Episcopal Church, where she served as a vestry member. She helped set up the altar and decorate the church for special services, building many friendships and dedicating herself to serving the church community she loved.
Lois cherished attending lunches and dinners with friends, classmates, EMT colleagues and members of her church. Many Fridays were spent at the Princess, followed by evenings at the American Legion, enjoying games of chance and girls' nights out.
Lois was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tars, with whom she shared 52 years of marriage; her son, Dennis; her sisters, Dorothy and Mary "Sis"; and her brother, William. She was also deeply fond of her cat, Charlie, who was buried next to her.
She is survived by her four sons — George and Lisa Hughes of Erie, Pa.; Rick and Pam Hughes of Cresaptown; Ken and Michele Hughes of Springs, Pa.; and John and Alo Hughes of Baltimore — who, while they may have driven her crazy, always stood by her side. Lois also leaves behind seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; her close sister, Peggy Woernle; her best friend, Betty Yates; and many close nieces and nephews.
Lois was known for her generous heart, strong devotion to God, and unwavering love for her family and friends. She touched many lives and was deeply loved by all who knew her. She will be truly missed. Love you, Mom.
