Louise Anne (Kerns) Duguid, 65, of Cumberland, died peacefully Monday, Nov. 4, 2019, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born Dec. 1, 1953, Louise graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1971. She lived for several years in Fort Wayne, Ind., where she earned her bachelor's degree as a double major in sociology and women's studies in 1996 from Indiana University. She earned her master's degree in social work in May 2008 from Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis.
Louise was loving and compassionate. She always had a kind word to say and donated her time to various causes to help those in need.
Louise was a student of Zen Buddhism under Roshi Philip Kapleau and Mitra Bishop Roshi. Louise expresses gratitude for her Zen teachers, her family, especially her son, Walter and his wife, Denise; her sister, Lois; her nieces and nephew, Renee, Amy and Marc; and longtime friends, Mitzi Morgan and Lynn Largent; her Buddhist friends, Cynthia Bussey and Keith Ramsey; and the Rev. Terry Ellen, along with her new friends at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Greater Cumberland.
She is grateful for all the support she received from Dr. Welik and the dialysis staff at Western Maryland Health System, Western Maryland Health System Wound Care Center, and Dr. Nelson at Western Maryland Health System Heart Institute for extending her life. She is also grateful for the kindness and compassion she has received from the staff at Western Maryland Health System.
Louise is preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Leona Kerns; sister, Georgia Lee Scott; and her partner, Ronald W. Duguid. She is survived by her son, Walter (Denise) of Glassboro, N.J.; sisters, Linda Miller (Gary) of Portland, Ore., and Lois Kerns of Cumberland; brother, Louis Kerns (Judy) of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services for Louise will be held at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 211 S. Lee St., Cumberland, on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019, at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Western Maryland Health System Outpatient Dialysis or Western Maryland Health System Wound Care Center.
Professional services are being provided to the family with the guidance of Smith Funeral and Cremation Care of Morgantown, W.Va.
