Marianne (Day) DuBose Obituary
Baltimore, MD - Marianne Day DuBose, formerly of Cumberland, passed away at her home in Baltimore on April 6, her 74th birthday.
She was the daughter of Mary Carmel (Flook) Day, beloved Nursing Supervisor at Sacred Heart Hospital, and James "Jimmy" Day, a well-regarded sports editor for The Cumberland Times-News, Marianne followed in her father's footsteps by becoming an acclaimed writer herself.
A 1969 graduate of Bishop Walsh High School, she was both the Sweetheart Queen of 1968 as well as a member of the Queen's court for the annual BW-Beall football game. Blessed with an amazing singing voice, she once took over conducting the Glee Club Christmas Concert when Sister Madeline Marie, affectionately known as "The General," fell and broke her arm. And local music fans may still recall her thrilling rendition of Jefferson Airplane's Somebody to Love at area dances.
After graduating from Towson University, she worked for The Sun and The Daily Herald papers in Gulfport, Mississippi. She excelled as a feature writer, winning regional awards for her investigative writing, including an in-depth series on the AIDS epidemic.
Her strong suit, however, was always her personal interest stories, whether she was interviewing the legendary Bear Bryant or the woman who sold handmade bikinis at the side of the road. Her warm personality and genuine interest in people made others want to open up to her.
Following a career with the newspapers, she worked for the AIDS Task Force in Mississippi, where her frank and honest answers to students' questions about HIV made her a popular guest speaker at schools.
Marianne moved back to Maryland in the early 2000's to be nearer to family in Cumberland as well as closer to her beloved only sibling, Maureen (Day) Pullias; her brother-in-law David; and her cherished nephew Kevin. In Baltimore she worked with the Baltimore City prison population doing HIV counseling and later working with former convicts at a halfway house.
Although a talented writer and a compassionate counselor to so many marginalized people, Marianne's greatest gift may have been her ability to maintain her many friendships. Throughout the years, and frequently by handwritten letters, she stayed in touch with friends scattered far and wide. She will be sorely missed by all.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on September 25, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Marianne's Childhood Parish Saint Mary's, 300 East Oldtown Road, Cumberland, Md. A reception will be held immediately following the Mass. The burial will commence at 2 p.m. at Saint Mary's Cemetery.
In lieu of cards and flowers, the family requests that we honor Marianne's love for cats and make donations to the Maryland SPCA, 3300 Falls Road, Baltimore, Md. 21211. https://www.mdspca.org
