LaVale, Maryland - Mark Edward Nies, 75, of LaVale, passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2026, after a long battle with cancer.

Born March 26, 1951, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late John A. Nies Jr. and Martha R. (Steiner) Nies.

He is survived by his wife, Susan (Sigler) Nies. He is also survived by daughter, Brandi Nies, South Carolina; and sister, Sharon Nies, Cumberland; sister-in-law, Selina Smith (Chuck); sister-in-law, Lisa Rayner (Dave); and several nieces and nephews.

Mark was Catholic by faith and was a 1969 graduate of Bishop Walsh High School.

Mark worked for many years in the produce departments at County Market, Giant Eagle and Martin's. After retirement, he worked part-time at several other area markets.

Mark truly was a character. He had a unique personality and sense of humor, and loved to talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime. He never met a stranger. He enjoyed hearing and telling a good joke and kept several in rotation that he repeated over and over!

Mark was happiest being outside. He could always be found working in his yard or sitting on the back of his truck talking and sharing a laugh with friends and neighbors or anyone passing by. His passion was taking care of his lawn, and it showed. He will always be remembered with a mower or lawn care tool in his hands.

He also enjoyed helping neighbors and friends with their yards or whatever they needed. He was a hard worker and always willing to lend a helping hand.

Mark was a die-hard Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull fan. He was an avid golfer and was proud of his hole-in-one in August of 2000 in Garrett, Pa.

He enjoyed a good poker game now and then, watching the news or all things sports-related on TV and, in the last few years, he enjoyed his weekly trips to area markets for the "deals."

He was the giver of gift cards to his wife and the provider of produce/treats for their great-nieces and nephews, and they always enjoyed their care packages from Uncle Markie.

Mark had a soft spot for all animals. He enjoyed feeding the birds and he loved and took great care of the 10 cats that had adopted him over the years.

According to Mark's wishes, he will be cremated, and there will be no viewing or service.

Also, thanks to staff of Ruby Memorial, Select Specialty Hospital and Encompass Rehab for the great care Mark received during his stay in Morgantown.

A very special thank you to family, neighbors and friends who supported Mark during his illness and brightened his days with visits, prayers, cards and kindness. You are appreciated more than you know.
