Michael Francis Acre Obituary

Michael Francis Acre, 93, of Hagerstown, passed away June 30, 2018, at his home.

Born Sept. 14, 1924, in Frostburg to the late Frank and Sarah (Santore) Acre, Michael was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, earning the European Theatre Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, Battle Stars and Good Conduct Medal. He served in the 278th Field Artillery under General Patton's 3rd U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, involved in the Holy Name Society, and associated with American Little League, Colt League, and Pony League. Michael worked for Mack Truck for 23 years, retiring in 1985, and was a member of VFW Post 1936 as well as American Legion Post 42.

He is survived by his children, Terry M. Acre and his significant other, Dee Helman, Hagerstown, James D. Acre and his wife, Sally, Smithsburg, Carolyn Wollard and her husband, Ray, Diana Steiner and her husband, Rod, and Debra Ward and her husband, Jim, all of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Kerri Bennett and her husband, John, Christie Crossland, Ryan Acre and his wife, Cassie, Jared Acre and his wife, Nikki, Josiah (Joe) Acre and his wife, Kara, Sarah Staley and her husband, Kane, Rachel Olson and her husband, Jake, Brook Whitson and her husband, Brooks, and Adam Ward and his wife, Maggie; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Rosemary Berger, Hagerstown, and Esther Wampler, Frostburg.

The family thanks Hospice of Washington County and Spirit Lutheran, especially caregivers Heidi and Carrie, for the wonderful care provided to Mr. Acre.

Friends will be received at Harman Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, on Thursday, July 5, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m. Rosary service will be held at 7:45 p.m.

The funeral home will be open for the convenience of family and friends on Thursday, July 5, 2018, starting at 10 a.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 6, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, with Fr. Lawrence Adamczyk as celebrant.

Interment immediately following with military honors, provided by Joint Veterans Council of Washington County, will be held in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742, would be appreciated by the family.
